The Family of Joseph Ashby Gillett, Banker of Banbury and Oxford

Joseph Ashby Gillett was one of the sons of William Gillett of Brailes, Warwickshire. Joseph Ashby Gillett founded Gillett's Bank of Banbury which was sold to Barclays Bank in 1919 by his grandson. Joseph Ashby married Martha Gibbins (1798-1882) in 1821. Martha was the daughter of Joseph Gibbins (1756-1811) and his wife Martha (1758-1827). Joseph and Martha Gibbins had at least three other children - Brueton (1783-1855), Mary (c.1785-1875) who married Henry Aggs (1780-1859), and Joseph (1787-1870).
Joseph Ashby and Martha Gillett had eleven children:
- Martha (1823-1895), married Joseph Bevan Braithwaite (1818-1905) and had: Martha (1853-), Anna Lloyd (1854-1878), Joseph Bevan, (1855-1934) who married Anna Sophia Gillett (1855-1899), daughter of Jonathan Gillett, in 1881 and then Grace Moscrip, Mary Caroline (1857- ), Elizabeth (1858- , married George Henry Emmott in 1881), Rachel Barclay (1859- ), George (1861- ), William Charles (1862-1922), and Catherine Lydia (1864- )

- Joseph (1828-1850)
- Charles (1830-1895), married Gertrude Mary Tregelles (1833-1932) and had: Charles Edwin (1861-1919), Gertrude Martha (1863- ), Mary Catherine (1867- ), Joseph Ashby (1868-1942), Margaret (1868- ), Agnes Marion (1869- ), Henry Tregelles (1870-1955), a Mayor of Oxford in 1938/39, Edward (1872- ), Richenda (1873- ), and Sarah Mabel (1875- ).
- Elizabeth (1835-1862)
- Alfred (1834-1894), married Frederica Isabella Augusta Lort-Phillips and had: Frederick William Alfred Herbert (1872- ), Frederica Florence Elizabeth (1873- ), Florence Emmeline Phillipa (1874- ) and Ethel Frances (1882- ).
- George (1837-1893), married Hannah Rowntree (sister of Joseph Rowntree) and had: Julia Hannah (1869- ) George Masterman (1870- ), Sarah Martha B. (1872- ) and Arthur Bevington (1875-1954), who married Margaret Clark from Street, Somerset of the shoe-manufacturing company.
